I’ve been thinking about how the things we pursue in life. I’m wondering if the more we pursue them the more out of reach they are. Examples:

  • happiness - often found by not seeking it.
  • meaning - searching for meaning can lead to deeper existential grief.
  • pleasure - we get diminishing returns from pleasurable actions.

There may well be exceptions to each and this list isn’t conclusive but I think there’s some truth to this. Certainly, the better we are at a skill, the harder it becomes to improve at that skill and the less noticeable improvements become.

I can’t tell you the implications of thoughts like this, but it’s what is on my mind.
